State Quarter Error Coins
The U.S. Mint prints billions of coins each year, and inevitably, something goes wrong and a coin in stamped with an error. One would think that the number of error coins could be huge, but in fact, U.S. Mint errors only total approximately 50,000. If one of these error coins is found, it can be very valuable.
Though there are a fair number of U.S. Mint errors to be found in today's market, understandably, numismatic errors are much more common in older coins, since the process was not as automated as it is today. But, it seems that over the years, especially since the state coins have been produced, the number of these numismatic errors has increased, as mint control of finished coins has decreased.
This lack of quality control is very good for collectors, although one still needs to be careful that a distinction is made between authentic coin errors, when it is damaged during the minting process, and coins that have just been worn over time.
The ideal way for collectors to keep a sharp eye out for these rare coin errors, is to research the types of common errors, as well as the known coins that have errors.
